The International Capital Market Association (ICMA) has extended its guide to repo markets series to cover .

The South African repo market is by far the most developed on the African continent and has a number of sophisticated features that make it more comparable to developed markets than other emerging or developing markets, the report highlights.

The guide provides an overview of the region’s market, highlighting recent developments, describing the structure and operation of the market, its infrastructure, types of collateral and counterparties, and the legal and regulatory framework.

This report is the ninth in a series of guides on domestic repo markets, published as part of the firm’s commitment to supporting the development of repo markets globally.

The South African guide is open access and available for all to download, and was made possible through the Special Purpose Reserve Fund of Strate, in the interest of supporting market education and the alignment of South Africa’s financial markets to international best practice.
